Creating Your Own Country!

 Build Your Dream Country!

This is the design for the "Creating your Own Country" project! This project challenges student to design their own country, starting with a map of what their country would look like.

Not only is this project fun for students, but it gives them an opportunity to apply their knowledge of maps and how they work to their own, unique country.

Here are some student examples of completed "Creating Your Own Country" projects! As you can see from these projects, students are given the creative freedom to make their country however they'd like. They have a few rules to follow to make sure that the teacher knows that they understand the elements of a map, in addition to what is needed for a country to function. I think that this project is an incredible way for students to apply what they know. In addition, the teacher provides a list of factors that students need to think about when making their own country, such as government type, unemployment, imports, etc. This prompts the students to think critically and realistically about all of the factors that go into making a country run. Although they're making a fictitious country, they have to consider real-world factors that go into how a real country runs. I also think it's great for the students to have a graphic organizer to fill out before they put all the gathered information onto their country's folder. By having them write out all the information first, they get to do their own research and then present it in their own creative way.

I also really enjoyed that the students would have an opportunity to create a flag for their country. Representation is extremely important and students will have a chance to see how other countries made certain design decisions with their flags. This prompts students to think about their flag design and create a country identity. This will help the students understand cultural identity and how a country's history can impact how they represent themselves.

That's All For Now!

I hope you enjoyed learning about this project as much as I did! I can't wait to update you soon on all of the other fun projects that I'm working on in class!
