Keeping It Current with World Events!

 Do you know what's happening in the Ukraine right now?

This is a picture of a Ukrainian citizen after the attack from Russia. I got this picture from a newsela article called "Why is Russia invading Ukraine?". 

This article gave me the following writing prompt: 

Make a clear, defensible claim (justifiable argument) about the topic of the text. Write a paragraph to support your claim with clear reasons and relevant evidence from the article.

My claim regarding the topic of this text is that these attacks on the Ukraine could have effects on the rest of the world. According to the article, a former prime minister of the Ukraine, Oleksiy Honcharuk, stated that "'It could be the start of a third world war. We should realize it, because Putin will not stop'". This should be taken very seriously, as a former prime minister of the Ukraine would have close contact with Putin while they were in office. If a third world war were to occur, it would have effects on the rest of the world since countries from different sides of the globe would be involved. Another reason the attacks on the Ukraine could have effects on the rest of the world is that the global economy will be effected. The article states that Russia has exports, such as grain and oil, which are necessary for Europeans to get food and for the rest of the world to have oil to power cars and other things that require fossil fuels. This effects the United States in particular because our gas prices have skyrocketed. The attacks could also have an impact on the rest of the world because if NATO chooses to get involved, then the 30 countries that are allied will get involved. This includes major world powers, such as the United States. Although NATO hasn't gotten involved yet since the Ukraine isn't a part of NATO, the fear Putin has of NATO, which was expressed in the article, shows that NATO wields a lot f power that Putin views as a threat.
